Posted Tuesday, Ap| Review this album | Report (Review #29925) After the jazzy Grand Wazoo album, Zappa made 5 records between 19, and this one is the most instrumental and jazz/fusion by far! "Cheepnis" is an absolutely addictive track, very catchy, rhythm changing, complex and fast! The consecutive "Echidna's Arf" and "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" demonstrate a great mastering of the challenging synchronization of instrumentation those tracks have very complex and fast fusion patterns Ruth Underwood's percussions are outstanding! Zappa does not miss to play some impossible guitar solos. "Be-Bop Tango" is a 16 minutes tracks where Zappa invites some people in the audience to dance while George Duke scats and plays a solo at the same time this track also contains an outstanding trombone solo, plus "impossible to play" xylophone-drums-bass-trumpet combination. The record has many fast and complex instrumental parts. This is a highly anticipated release for Zappa fans who have waited many years for the concert footage to finally be released. That's entertainment! This double LP record has been recorded live, and Frank Zappa plays the role of an entertainer on it! There are many parts where just a light background music gives an atmosphere to the conversations and to Zappa's oral presentations. It captures Frank and the Mothers at the height of their powers and includes material that is unique to these performances. Now fully restored by the Zappa Family Trust this live concert film is being made available for the first time. However the performances were also filmed in 16mm and this footage has been sitting in the Zappa vault ever since. Frank and the Mothers played three nights on December 8th, 9th & 10th and these shows formed the basis of the 'Roxy & Elsewhere' album that was released in 1974. "Frank Zappa's concerts at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood in December 1973 are legendary. Other than the general slightly 'soft' look of 43 year old film stock, this looks and sounds absolutely amazing and it's a great pleasure to see Frank looking like he is having just so much damn fun! Hugely recommended.įZ, George Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Bruce Fowler, Ruth Underwood, Tom Fowler, Ralph Humphrey and Chester Thompson just tear it up. The story apparently is that there were terrible sync issues AND speed fluctuations on the original film stock between the visual and the audio and it has taken until today's technology for them to be able to make this a quality product.Īll of this is undoubtably true, but the good news is that you would never, ever know from watching this that there were ever these issues. One of the most sought after and wished for archival releases finally squeaks out into the world *only* 42 years after being shot. Zappa, Frank - Roxy : The Movie Blu-ray + CD 28-EV 335219
